YMCA Sailing Club

The YMCA of Canberra Sailing Club (YMCASC) is a family orientated sailing club situated on Yarralumla Bay, Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. Part of the YMCA of Canberra, the YMCASC is a non-profit community service organization. The club runs sailing races for dinghies, catamarans and trailable yachts as well as training courses for children and adults with no prior sailing experience. With excellent facilities and a large active membership, the YMCASC is an ideal place to sail.

Established in 1963, club activities initially centred on LakeGeorge until the filling of Lake Burley Griffin in 1964. The clubhouse was built in ten months by volunteer labour in time for the Heron Nationals that commenced on 31 December 1966. The boat-shed was constructed eleven years later in 1977.

The Club is run by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who are dedicated to the sport of sailing and also to the Club. Races for dinghies, catamarans and trailable yachts are conducted for all standards from novices to seasoned experts. Anyone can join; whether you are interested in learning the skills of sailing, or enjoy the experience and exhilaration of racing, the YMCASC is a great place to sail. The Club has excellent facilities including the Regatta Room - a large function hall, a large fleet of training boats and boat-shed space. The function hall and some other facilities are available for hire (conditions apply). The Club caters for sailors with disabilities using specially designed Access dinghies.

Training courses are held throughout the sailing season, mostly for beginners with no prior sailing experience. Graduates are encouraged to join the Club and take part in sailing activities that usually begin with the Twilight "learn-to-race" series on Tuesday evenings. A major focus of club racing is the Saturday afternoon competition for more experienced sailors, in which there is a strong turnout in a variety of classes. Club members have been very successful over the years with National Champions in Cherubs, Herons, 505s, Seaflys, 420s, Spirals, Stingrays, Mosquitos, Paper Tigers, Cobras, Maricats, Windrushs, 2.4mR and other classes.
