Racing with the YMCA Sailing Club

The YMCASC has a competent and experienced team of Yachting Australia (YAI) qualified race officers as well as a fleet of 5 race support boats suitable for the management of sail racing. The club conducts weekly and twilight races, and State, Regional and National Titles for dinghy, catamaran and trailable yacht classes.

The attraction of racing sailing boats
Racing sailing boats is an enjoyable and challenging sport. The aim is to complete the course in the shortest possible time. To do this the crew must get the maximum boat speed out of the available wind. This involves setting the sail(s) properly using devices which control the angle of the sail and its shape. As well, a knowledge of tactics, the racing rules and local conditions plays an important part. This makes sailing a complete sport with both the exhilaration of fast paced racing and the tactics to keep the challenge alive.

Saturday Afternoon Races (2 PM)
Saturday afternoon races are the major races for the club and are designed for more experienced sailors. Races are open to all sailors who are members of a YAI (Yachting Australia) accredited sailing club and are conducted in accordance with the issued sailing instructions (SI). They are long course races (1 1/2 hrs approx) or alternate course races (3 races of ½ hr approx) and are held in the middle of the West Lake section of Lake Burley Griffin. Boats are divided into various classes that start at different times and compete amongst themselves.

Saturday afternoon races are divided into Pointscore and Championship series that are separate competitions based on handicap and scratch results. Classes take it in turns to run the races through a duty system where they supply crew for the start and rescue boats as well as people to help do administrative and race support work around the clubhouse. Although these races are for more experienced sailors, Club boats can be hired (conditions apply) to race, or sailors without boats can obtain crewing positions to gain experience.

Twilight Series (6 PM)
A Twilight "learn-to-race" series is held every Tuesday afternoon during daylight saving with the clubhouse opening at 5:00 PM and racing from 6:00-7:30. This program is for less experienced sailors and instruction is offered to help improve the standard of beginners. They are held just out from Yarralumla Bay and are short course races. The competition is held almost exclusively in boats hired from the training fleet and private Spirals or Lasers.

Tuesday Twilight Sailing (5pm)

Twilight Sailing Sessions is in place to continue developing your skills after your training course. It's there for people who may already race and want to get around the course faster or those who want to get out on the water and have a relaxing sail after a busy day at work. All evenings come with a hint of racing, because learning to sail faster and more efficiently only leads to one thing, that being racing!

Twilight Sailing is a weekly informal session, which runs every Tuesday starting on the 21st Nov, right through til 27th March (with a break over Christmas). There are a total of 18 twilight sessions for the season and will take place rain, hail or shine, wind or no wind. Session costs are $10 per person
